The quickest time it can be done is in 3 days, although for those with more time, it can extend from 3 to 5 to 7 days with other places to visit along the way. Just talk to us for a personalized plan.
Day 1 – Equator Adventure & Lake Mburo Safari
The drive from Kampala to Lake Bunyonyi takes 8-10 hours, depending on the stops you want to make. Here is a list of places on the way:
Equator stop, which is 2 hours away from Kampala. People typically spend close to 40 minutes or even more. It all depends on you. You can decide to do an experiment where you see water swirl in a different direction depending on the side of the hemisphere you are at (center, north, and southern hemisphere). It’s also a good stop for breakfast, lunch, or coffee.
Continuing with the drive another 2-3 hours away is one of the smallest national parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo National Park. It’s the only place you can easily see zebras, impalas, elands, topis, and more, including hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, and buffaloes, but no lions and elephants.
At times, we don’t spend a full day in the park but rather just pass by one of the lodges at the edge of the park and have lunch there. We don’t pay park fees at that lodge since it’s at the edge of the park. Animals come all the way and can be seen. Sometimes, we pay $20-30 to take a 2-hour walk or bicycle ride in the park, similar to Hell’s Gate in Kenya. But if people have time, we stay a night there and explore the park more. If not, we drive to Lake Bunyonyi and reach there at the end of the day.
Day 2 or 3 – Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi or Mgahinga
Wake up early in the morning and drive for 1-2 hours to reach the briefing point, depending on which gorilla group we are tracking. Ruhija is the closest family to Bunyonyi. Other families such as Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga, Nsonji are a bit farther and require two hours or slightly more, depending on the condition of the road. NOTE: We can also help you choose the gorilla family according to your fitness level. The fittest individuals can opt for places with difficult trails. Let us know, and we will book gorilla permits and accommodation.
Track gorillas in two places in Uganda:
- Bwindi – the largest forest and national park for gorillas. It’s also the most well-known on the internet and in guidebooks. It’s a super beautiful impenetrable forest with over 20 gorilla families. Please share your fitness level so we can advise according to how difficult the trail is.
- Kisoro (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park), which is the neighbor to Volcano Gorilla National Park in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo. Nyakagezi group is located here. I like this group because if you are lucky, you can see Golden monkeys. It’s the only place in the world where gold meets silver. Kisoro is in the far southwest of Uganda and it borders Rwanda and Congo. It’s this very park of gorillas which borders Volcanoes Park in Rwanda and Virunga in Congo.
Have a lazy afternoon/evening and chill after gorilla tracking. The trail is slightly easier than most of the Bwindi places and can be favorable for older individuals, those with less time, or those who prefer an easier hike.
Drive back to Kampala later or continue to day 3.
Day 3 – Lake Bunyonyi Scenic Drive & Cultural Show
BUNYONYI:
Drive to Lake Bunyonyi. Upon arrival, take a scenic lake drive around Lake Bunyonyi before having lunch at the place with the best view in the area. We will stay there and rest after a small guided walk around the lake. Additional activities include visiting some islands on the lake or even staying at one of them, ranging from budget options to luxury accommodations.
Safari to the countryside begins. Lying 250 km from Kampala is one of Uganda’s best-kept secrets for game drives. Lake Mburo is among Uganda’s smallest but most unique national parks. It is the most accessible and one of the few parks to see zebras in Uganda, and the only game park to support a population of impala, the antelope creature Kampala is named after. There are options available in the park to take the rare opportunity to see game on foot or by bicycles and stay overnight at one of the lodges of choice as per the plan. We can do bicycles here and nature walks to track all animals. Lake Mburo is the park where one can freely walk and even see all animals that reside there.
Experience a cultural show that brings you close to the culture of the longhorn Ankole cattle and the cow culture. This kind of place is so nice that I recommend 2 nights and 3 days, but we can work with anyone according to their time and plan in a personalized way.
